# Think local, act local

**The world looks very different from India**

Greetings from Chennai where we have spent the past week working with a new client.

Even in March it’s hot here day and night – more than 30C every day – and the contrast with even the unseasonably warm London that we left behind is welcome. That, combined with reading the Indian media for a week, made me think about how it is easy to forget that the world can look very different depending on where you are observing it from.

Here, Donald Trump’s flip-flopping on tariffs and “deal-making” with Vladimir Putin over Ukraine don’t seem half as big a deal and don’t get the endless “lives” that American and British websites give them. Instead, they are just covered in reports the next morning. The effect is to make them less worrisome.

Instead, the reporting focuses on central government efforts to force Hindi learning on local populations, local intercommunal strife and the quite frankly astonishing local economic growth story (8% in Tamil Nadu next year). And cricket, obviously – not “local” in this case as India were beating the rest of the world.

The news business story is different too. Print only started declining when covid kicked in – contrast this with points further west where this started a longggg time ago. The switch to social and video consumption has been, if anything, more pronounced than in North America, Britain and Europe. And such is the size of the market that sales numbers that would send subs and circulation teams out to the nearest bar to celebrate are met with a shrug.

It was a useful reminder that when it comes to news, there may be some international stories and some globally applicable business trends, but truly everything is, at its heart, local.
